We made it to Tanzania without too much of a hassle. They wanted to charge us duty for all our excess luggage, but we were able to persuade them differently.
We slept well at the Kia Lodge near the airport and had a great breakfast there. We left on two very loaded vans to get to the airport – 24 pieces of luggage plus our carry-ons. We had a rain shower while eating breakfast but now it is sunny; unfortunately, we didn’t see the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro due to the clouds – hopefully we will on our way back!
At the airport, we got all of our luggage through without being scanned since the machines were down and not working [blessing #1 – they had several medical supplies and medications that would have been a huge hassle to go through]. They also thought they would be able to fit it all on our next flight [blessing #2 – there are more restrictions on this last flight and the team was unsure if they’d have to hassle with sending some of their luggage on later flights]; they charged us $450 for the extra weight.
After we checked in for the flight, we found out that our flight was delayed due to a crash at Mwanza. We are waiting to find out when we can leave–it could be awhile…
I will hopefully have my laptop running once we get to Mwanza; last night the wireless at Kia Lodge wasn’t working very well thus no message!
