We are at KIA Lodge near the airport where we have day rooms so we can shower and repack our bags! We bought much more than we had anticipated so have 5 bags stuffed instead of 2 or 3 had we not bought anything.
We just finished our 3 day safari and had a great time. The weather was amazing considering how much it rained through our time here. The first day was spent in the Serengeti; we saw some amazing animals and got some great pictures. We spent the first night in a tented cabin–our Tanzanian travel agent was able to get a luxury camping lodge for the rustic lodge price. It reminded me of the tenting lodges in the colonial day movies. We were amazed with the accommodations and the food was served to our table instead of a buffet line–it was a 5 star meal. We got up early so we could take off early for Ngorongoro Crater–the largest crater in the world (100 sq miles) that is populated by animals. There is a salt water pool filled with flamingos and fresh water with hippos. We saw 4 of the 5 “big 5” animals: lions, water buffalo, rhino, elephant. We didn’t see a leopard but did see a cougar walking near us. The climb in and out of the crater was also impressive and fairly steep. We had box lunches each day on the way and stopped along the way to Arusha to eat. In Arusha we stopped at a wonderful place for handicapped people where they make jewelry and other items for sale. In Tanzania, the handicapped are often shunned so this was a great place for them to study and earn a living. We are now at the Lodge waiting to be transferred back to the airport for our journey back to the US. Since we have a long layover in Amsterdam, Bob is taking us on a tour of the city before we fly out at 230pm. I think we are all anxious to get home and see family. See you all soon.
